Bay Farm Montessori Academy is pleased to announce the formation of a new middle school for seventh- and eighth-grade students.
The Middle School will be a learning community based on the educational philosophy of Maria Montessori and typified by active, engaged, and meaningful learning.
The school will be housed in one of the current school buildings on Bay Farm’s nine-acre campus.
Opening in the fall of 2009, the Middle School at Bay Farm will emphasize individualized instruction, which is designed to foster independent learning.
Students will be highly encouraged and taught to be self-directed, independent, reflective, and respectful.
A vigorous academic program will be centered on math, humanities (literature, social studies, geography, and history), science, and writing, delivered in a two-year cycle.
These studies will be complemented by a stepped-up foreign language program, performing and visual arts, technology, and physical education.
The decision to begin a middle school program at Bay Farm follows years of planning, research, and thoughtful consideration.
The Board of Trustees established a study group charged with studying the feasibility of establishing a school for this age group.
This group engaged in research, observed at other middle schools, brought in outside speakers, held forums, surveyed present families, and explored the candidate field.
They presented their findings and recommendation to the Board who overwhelmingly voted in favor of creating the Middle School at Bay Farm.
Applications are now being accepted. Though priority will be given to students with previous Montessori education, the school is open to all students who will be entering grades 7th or 8th in the fall of 2009.
